DHAKA: Bangladesh lost some of its glittering stars from the showbiz realm who contributed immense to uplift the country’s music and cinema scenes.

With 2018 now ending, Banglanews remembers 11 celebrities who died in the past 12 months.

Siraj Haider

Popular Dhallywood actor Siraj Haider died of a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dhaka's Kalyanpur on Jan 11. He was 71. The veteran actor served for around 50 years.

Shammi Akter

‘Dhaka Shohor Aisha Aamar’ famed singer Shammi Akter departed for eternity on Jan 16. She was 62. She did playback in more than a hundred films. The artist was suffering from breast cancer.

Kazi Aziz Ahmed

‘Chokh Je Moner Kotha Bole’ famed lyricist Kazi Aziz Ahmed died at his daughter's home in Sherpur on Jan 30. He was 79. He was a scriptwriter, story writer, dialogue writer and director at the same time. He lived for 79 years.

Sabah Tani

The 80s’ famous singer Sabah Tani passed away at her residence in Dhaka's Uttara on Feb 19. She was 49. Her body was found at a bathroom in her home. It was suspected that she might have died from low blood pressure related illness.

Ali Akbar Rupu

Renowned music director-composer Ali Akbar Rupu died on Feb 22. He tuned songs for popular TV magazine show Ityadi for long two decades. He lasted only 57 years.

Rani Sarker

The 70s’ popular actress Rani Sarker died on July 7, at the age of 86. She appeared in more than 250 films. She was awarded National Film Awards for her contribution to Bangla films. 

Ayub Bachchu

Legendary rock musician-guitarist LRB frontman Ayub Bachchu passed away on Oct 18. He was suffering from cardiac complications. He lived for 56 years. He was laid to eternal rest at his hometown in port city of Chattogram. 

Anwar Hossain

Eminent photographer-choreographer Anwar Hossain was found dead at a residential hotel in Panthapath of Dhaka on Dec 1. He was 72. He was awarded National Film Awards five times for his contribution to Bangla cinema.

Monjur Hossain

Veteran filmmaker-actor Monjur Hossain died on Dec 7, at the age of 81. He was suffering from various old-age complications. He also produced films.

Amjad Hossain

‘Golapi Ekhon Train-e’ famed celebrated filmmaker Amjad Hossain breathed his last at a Bangkok hospital on Dec 14. He was awarded National Film Awards, Ekushey Padak and Swadhinota Padak for his wide contribution to Bangla cinema and culture.

Saidul Anam Tutul

Renowned drama and film director Saidul Anam Tutul passed away at a Dhanmondi hospital on Dec 18. He was 68. ‘Surja Dighal Bari’ and ‘Dipu Number Two’ are two of the films he worked for.
