DHAKA: The Customs Department is going to sue 555 persons for importing commercial goods through the Express Mail Service (EMS) of the Postal Department on false declaration.

Joint commissioner of the Internal Customs Department (ICD) Wahida Rahman Chowdhury told banglanews24.com.bd, “There is no rule for the import of taxable goods through the postal department. But an organized racket has long been involved in importing commercial goods through the EMS system.”

The authorities now want to put an end to the malpractice. “So, we are taking preparation for registering cases against a total of 555 files. Apart from examining 159 files, in the meantime, cases were lodged against 50.” Chowdhury said.

She informed that using the service, some goods are being brought in the country in contravention of the Customs Act, the Import-Export Act, the Money Laundering Act, and the BTRC Act.

Filing cases against the accused persons and companies began under sections 15, 16 and 32 of the Customs Act 1969, Chowdhury added.

Airport Customs Department, in a drive on July 4, seized 556 parcels and EMS packets from the Airport Post Office. Thereafter, more parcels and EMS packets were seized.

Later on July 20, the Postal and Customs Departments after a meeting decided to quickly deliver goods to the general clients.

In line with the decision, the authorities have taken initiative to check 555 parcels and EMS packets and file cases against the owners.
