BCL infighting, vandalism at SUST

SYLHET: Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League locked into clashes at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in the district on Tuesday late night centering the stabbing of an activist.

The infighting began among the supporters of SUST BCL unit vice president Anjan Ray-Uttam group and Juhem-Mritunjoy group, backed by Asad group, at 10:45pm, which last for an hour.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) additional commissioner (media) Rahmat Ullah confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Several students, who witnessed the incident, told banglanews, “Some 4/5 people led by Juhem of Asad group stabbed Shohag, an activist of Anjon group, leaving him injured on head and different parts of the body.”

Sohag, a 1st semester student of Industrial and Production Engineering department, was admitted at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital later.  

Following the incident, supporters of two groups locked into clashes in the middle point of Shah Poran Hall and 2nd Male Hall; at one stage, Asad group left the scene. Moments later, supporters of Anjan group attacked the 2nd hall and vandalized some 10 to 12 rooms of the dormitory.

SMP’s Jalalabad Thana Officer-In-Charge Gausul Azam confirming the matter to banglanews but could not give details of the causality.

Confirming the matter to banglanews, SUST proctor Himadri Shekhor Roy said, “We have talked to both groups, a meeting has been called on Wednesday between them and the authorities will take necessary steps after investigation.”

Tense situation prevailed at the campus; additional police forces remained deployed there, told AC Rahmat Ullah.
