DU admission seekers continue hunger strike unto death

DHAKA: The silence of night was broken with the sound of songs, recitations and protest slogans. The cultural program on the premises of Central Shaheed Minar was seen Thursday midnight.

A group of Dhaka University admission seekers arranged the program as part of their hunger strike unto death upholding the demand of getting chance to sit for the varsity’s admission test for the second time.

The protesters continued the fast that began on Wednesday noon.

A participating student Sirajul Islam Sagar who passed Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations from Bir Sheshtha Munsi Abdur Rouf Collage told banglanews that the Dhaka University should declare the ban at least two years before. If they did it, it could help the admission seekers prepare accordingly.

Now, we are being victim of the decision, he added.

However, the organizers on Thursday evening said that many of the protesters were falling sick due to the fasting. Among them, Sajal of Notre Dame Collage, Rupak Das of Dhaka Commerce College and Nazrul of Bikrampur College got admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Moreover, eminent statesman Dr Kamal Hossain and ex-DUCSU VP Mahmudur Rahman Manna expressed their sympathy to the protesters terming their movement rightful.

Earlier, the protesters sent a memorandum to the president, also the chancellor of Dhaka University.

In the memorandum, they said that the Dhaka University’s sudden decision of not allowing the admission seekers to sit for test for the second time will affect their education.

Earlier on October 14, Dhaka University vice-chancellor after a meeting with the admission committee announced that they will not allow the students to sit for the admission test for second time from the next year.

But, the protesters vowed that they will continue their movement until their demand is not meet.
