6.1 magnitude quake hits Japan's Hokkaido

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Japan's northern island of Hokkaido at around 10:27 p.m. on Saturday.

The Meteorological Agency says there is no threat of a tsunami.

The agency says the epicenter was off the coast of Hokkaido, and the focus was 60 kilometers deep.

The quake registered lower 5 on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to 7 in the city of Nemuro and in the town of Shibetsu.

An intensity of 4 was registered in the city of Kushiro and in the towns of Taiki, Kushiro, Akkeshi, Hamanaka, Shibecha, Teshikaga, Tsurui, Shiranuka, Betsukai, Nakashibetu and Rausu.
