BD-origin ‘jihadist’ killed in Syria battle

LONDON: A Bangladeshi born ‘jihadist’ has died while fighting in Syria.

The deceased jihadist (in Islamic term ‘mujahid’) Muhammad Hamidur Rahman, 25, is a British citizen, used to live at Portsmouth.

He left the UK last October after telling his family he was going to deliver aid to Syria as part of a ‘convoy’.

He was killed two weeks ago fighting for the Islamic State, also known as ISIS.

Abu-Suyeb Tanzam, a committee member at Portsmouth’s Jam-e-Mosque, said Hamidur’s death was ‘very sad’.

Tanzam also said, “It’s a strong warning to others. It’s a message to any young people who are thinking about following this path. They are wasting their lives if they go over there and join the war and they will be killed for nothing.”

He also said he had been in touch with Hamidur’s family, who live in Southsea.

Hamidur is one of 10 Britons of Bangladeshi origin who have travelled to Syria to fight for the Islamic State.

He entered the country overland from Turkey after flying there with five fellow jihadists.
