DHAKA: A historic tower built in the 19th century collapsed in the Nepali capital of Kathmandu following a severe earthquake on Saturday.

At least 50 people were trapped in the tower, local media reported, says The Straits Times.

The Dharara Tower, built in 1832, was a historic landmark that had been open to visitors for the last 10 years and had a viewing balcony on its eighth floor.

Around a dozen bodies were taken away from the ruins of the tower which sustained massive damage when the 7.9 magnitude quake struck at lunch time, according to a media photographer at the scene.
