A 5.8 magnitude quake shook northern Pakistan on Tuesday, killing three and injuring several, according to a statement issued by the national press agency, APP.

At least three people were reportedly killed and dozens injured after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake severely jolted Mirpur and adjoining areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Pakistan Television, three persons were reported dead while more than 50 persons were injured.

Police, local people and army personnel have started rescue operations in the area.

The earthquake badly affected Jatlan area of Mirpur where communication infrastructure including road, electricity and telephone facilities are reported to be partially damaged.

Meanwhile, according to Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) sources, Mangla Dam and its power house are safe and as part of precautionary measures, turbines were first stopped and later put into operation again. 

"There are reports of damages, that is all I know for now. I can confirm that there was one woman who died, and that there are several people who got injuries," Mirpur District Deputy Commissioner Raja Qaisar told television channelGeo TV.

Earlier, the earthquake struck Pakistan's capital Islamabad and other cities in the eastern Punjab province, scaring many people who rushed out of multistory buildings and homes. Tremors were felt in parts of northern India as well.

Pakistan's Meteorological Department says according to its preliminary assessment the epicenter of the 5.8-magnitude quake was located near the mountainous city of Jehlum in the Punjab province.

The tremors shook walls in Islamabad and left people standing in the streets outside.
