Bold Violet Lip

Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’O knows a thing or two about wearing a chic bright lip, and we loved the cool purple tone she wore to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Governors Awards in Hollywood.

To create the look, her makeup artist Nick Barose swiped on a bright fuchsia lipstick by MAC as the base colour.

‘I paired electric purple lips with her black and white Prabal Gurung tux dress, a la ‘70s supermodels, and it’s a fun alternative to a red lip for the holidays,’ he told us.

He then added a sheer metallic sheen by dabbing a purple eye shadow at the centre.

‘A metallic hint in the centre of the lip brings out the colour even more, and adds interesting textures,’ he noted, reports InStyle.

Even if you don’t opt for a violet shade like the star, you can still amp up your lip colour using the same method.

Just pick up either a metallic hue close to your lip colour, or a sheer, opalescent shadow, and pat the colour over the top of your lips with a clean makeup brush.

It’s an easy way to expand your current lipstick wardrobe, and present a modern twist to the old-school matte effect.
