Sweden boosts aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh

Sweden has pledged USD 12.7 million (around Tk 155.4 crore) in humanitarian assistance to support Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh, according to a press release from the Swedish Embassy in Dhaka.

The funding will be distributed through eight humanitarian partners, including UNHCR, WFP, Norwegian Refugee Council, Islamic Relief, Action Against Hunger, Save the Children, and the International Rescue Committee.

The aid aims to address critical needs such as food security, nutrition, healthcare, protection services, emergency education, and access to water and sanitation in Cox’s Bazar, home to the world’s largest refugee camp.

Sweden's Ambassador to Bangladesh, Nicolas Weeks, stated, "Sweden stands firmly with Bangladesh in responding to humanitarian needs in the country, including those of Rohingya refugees, just as we have for the past seven years."

He added, "This year, we are increasing our initial allocation compared to last year, because of growing humanitarian needs, not least in the world's largest refugee camp in Cox's Bazar."

In addition to supporting international organizations, Sweden is partnering with Start Fund Bangladesh to enable 26 local and national NGOs to respond effectively to emergencies.

Sweden remains one of the world's largest humanitarian donors and a key provider of core support to UN agencies such as UNHCR, WFP, UNICEF, and UNFPA, as well as the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).
