A Dhaka court on Thursday (April 17) sentenced controversial gold trader Arav Khan and seven others to life imprisonment in a case filed over the murder of Special Branch (SB) Inspector Mamun Imran Khan.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib delivered the verdict today in the presence of six accused who are now behind bars.
Two convicts, Arav Khan and Suraiya Akter Keya, were tried in absentia as they are on the run. Arav Khan’s real name is Robiul Islam, who is currently believed to be in Dubai.
The other convicts are Md Rahmat Ullah, Swapan Sarkar, Didar Pathan, Md Mizan Sheikh, Atik Hasan alias Dilu Sheikh, and Md Sarwar Hossain alias Charowar Hossain.
Two others, Annafi and Maisha, are facing trial separately in the Juvenile Court as they were underage during the incident and are currently out on bail.
According to case statement, the body of Mamun Imran Khan was recovered from a forest in Gazipur on July 9, 2018. Following the incident, the victim’s brother Jahangir Alam Khan filed a murder case with Banani Police Station in Dhaka.
Later, Detective Branch Inspector Sheikh Mahbubur Rahman submitted the charge sheet in court on April 8, 2019. The court framed charges against the accused and ordered the trial to begin on November 25, 2021.
Earlier on May 9 last year, Arav Khan was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment in an arms case, along with a fine of Tk 10,000. In default, he was to serve three more months in simple imprisonment.
