NOAKHALI: A leader of Awami League was shot dead when two groups of Juba League locked into clash in Chowdhury Haat area under Companiganj upazila of the district early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Jahidul Alam Maruf, 30, China AL unit organizing secretary, son of Jahangir Alam of the area.
Locals told banglanews “A case was filed over eve teasing with Companiganj police station on March 26, resulting two factions of the union Juba League unit – one led by unit secretary Yasin and the other led-by Sufian.”
Yasin’s supporters with weapons attacked the other group over the previous enmity early Sunday triggering a violent clash that left Maruf, loyal to Sufian, killed on the spot.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police recovered the body and took it to the thana compound.
Meanwhile, Sufian’s man set fire to Yasin’s business establishment and his house protesting the killing in the morning.
AL leader, also local Union Parishad chairman, Mozammel Hossain Kamrul told banglanews “JL leader Yasin and his brother Azad shot dead Maruf centering a trifle matter.”
Confirming the matter to banglanews, Companiganj police station Officer-In-Charge Sjedur Rahman Sajid said “The body was sent to Noakhali Medical College Hospital for autopsy.”
