DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) will announce the election schedule for electing country’s 21st President on Thursday (January 25). The date for the presidential election likely to be fixed from February 18 to 20.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda confirmed the matter of election schedule following a meeting with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the Parliament on Wednesday (January 24).
The EC sought the list of MPs from the Parliament to prepare the voter list, as the MPs choose the President. The Parliament, however, provided a list of 348 MPs to the EC.
Earlier on the day, Law Minister Anisul Huq said that the presidential election must be held before February 23 as per constitution and the EC will take step for it.
The countdown to elect the President has already begun, as the election must be held within a month before expire the tenure of current President.
The tenure of incumbent President Md Abdul Hamid will end on April 23. He took the charge of the country’s 20th president on February 24 in 2013 following the death of Zillur Rahman.
According to Article 123 of the constitution, the presidential election must be held between 90 and 60 days before the five-year term of the president expires.
