DHAKA: The Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who was sentenced to five years in jail in a graft case recently, cannot participate in the next election under the current situation.
However, the High Court will give final direction in this matter and the Election Commission will follow court order, he added.
He made the remarks to reporters after meeting the Chief Justice Syaed Mahmud Hossain at the latter’s office on Monday noon (February 19).
CEC said, “From what I understand as a former small-time judge is that Khaleda Zia will not be able to contest in the general election in her present context. She is convicted in a graft case. However, Supreme court will settle the matter at the end.”
