The Bangladesh women's cricket team recorded their largest victory margin in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), beating Ireland by 154 runs in the first ODI of a three-match series at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today.

Choosing to bat first, Bangladesh set a record total of 252-4, powered by Sharmin Akhter's career-best knock of 96 off 89 balls. 

Returning to international cricket after a break since July 2023, Sharmin dazzled with 14 boundaries but fell just shy of her maiden century, caught in the penultimate over while attempting a big hit.

Sharmin's efforts were complemented by Fargana Hoque’s composed 61 off 110 balls and a solid 59-run opening stand with Murshida Khatun (38 off 61). 

Ireland’s Freya Sargent was the standout bowler for the visitors, claiming 2-51, while Laura Delany and Aimee Maguire added a wicket each.

In response, Ireland's chase faltered early as Bangladeshi pacer Marufa Akter struck twice in the third over, removing skipper Gaby Lewis (5) and Amy Hunter (0) in consecutive deliveries. 

Although she missed out on a hat-trick, Marufa's fiery opening spell set the tone for a commanding performance by the hosts.

Sultana Khatun and Nahida Akter further dismantled Ireland's batting lineup, claiming three wickets each, while Marufa finished with two. 

Ireland’s innings collapsed at 98 runs in just 28.5 overs, with only Sarah Forbes (25) and Laura Delany (22) managing to put up a fight.

This comprehensive win surpassed Bangladesh’s previous record margin of 119 runs, achieved against South Africa in December 2022, when they scored their former highest ODI total of 250-3.

Leading 1-0 in the series, Bangladesh will aim to clinch the series in the second match, scheduled for November 30 at the same venue.
