Rangpur Riders clinch inaugural inaugural Global Super League title

Rangpur Riders clinched the historic first title of the Global T20 Super League, defeating Victoria by a commanding 56 runs in Guyana on Saturday.

Rangpur's journey to the title was anything but smooth. After starting the tournament with two consecutive losses, they staged a remarkable comeback, showcasing resilience and determination to emerge as champions.

The foundation of their victory was built on a sensational 124-run opening partnership between Steven Taylor and Soumya Sarkar, the highest of the tournament.

Taylor anchored the innings with a composed 68 off 49 balls, while Soumya stole the spotlight with a dazzling 86 off 54 deliveries. His innings, featuring elegant leg-side flicks and powerful strokes, not only became the highest individual score of the competition but also propelled Rangpur to a formidable 178/3—the league's highest team total.

Victoria began their chase aggressively, led by Joe Clarke’s quickfire 40 off 22 balls. However, their momentum faltered after Clarke’s dismissal to Mahedi Hasan in the 11th over. Victoria’s innings unraveled under the pressure of Rangpur’s disciplined bowling attack, folding for 122 in 18.1 overs.

The Riders’ bowlers were outstanding, with Mahedi Hasan (2/20) and Rishad Hossain (2 wickets) applying constant pressure. Harmeet Singh was the standout performer, claiming 3/19 in his four overs.

Rangpur's road to the final was fraught with challenges. Key players Soumya Sarkar, Rishad Hossain, and Afif Hossain were recalled by the Bangladesh Cricket Board for an ODI series against the West Indies starting December 8, forcing the team to expedite plans for the final. To make matters worse, Mohammad Saifuddin sustained an injury during a critical match, casting doubt over his availability.

Despite these setbacks, the team rallied together, overcoming every obstacle to deliver a memorable performance. Soumya Sarkar’s scintillating knock became the crowning moment of their triumph, cementing the Rangpur Riders’ place in history as the inaugural GSL champions.
