India defeat Bangladesh to win inaugural U-19 Women's Asia Cup

Bangladesh succumbed to a 41-run defeat against India in the inaugural edition of the Under-19 Women’s Asia Cup 2024 at the Bayuemas Oval on Sunday (Dec 22).

Despite a valiant effort from their bowlers, Bangladesh’s batting faltered in a high-pressure chase.

Opting to bowl first, Bangladesh’s bowlers gave their side a strong chance by restricting India to 117 for seven. Farjana Easmin delivered a standout performance, claiming four wickets for 31 runs in her four overs. Nishita Akter Nishi, continuing her fine form, grabbed two crucial wickets to ensure India’s batters were kept in check. Gongadi Trisha, however, proved to be the thorn in Bangladesh’s side, scoring a resilient 52 off 47 balls.

In response, Bangladesh struggled to build momentum. Early dismissals of Mosammat Eva and Sumaiya Akhter left them reeling. Fahomida Choya (18) and Juairiya Ferdous (22) offered some resistance, but wickets fell at regular intervals. Skipper Sumaiya Akter’s dismissal by Sonam Yadav further dented their hopes.

Aayushi Shukla’s brilliant spell (3.3-0-17-3) led to a dramatic collapse as Bangladesh lost their last seven wickets for just 21 runs.

Sonam Yadav and Parunika Sisodia chipped in with two wickets each, sealing India’s victory.
