KHULNA: Nowadays, almost everyone has a smart-phone and people have to take their phone out of their pockets to receive a call or to check messages but this can cause disturbances while attending a meeting or in a bus full of passengers.
How it would have been if even one could receive calls or read messages without the phone in the hand.
This question led two 3rd year students--Syed Tasnimul Islam and Syed Irfan Ali Mirza--of Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) to make smart-watch.
The reporter, on behalf of banglanews, talked to these two little geniuses about their invention.
During the time, they told about the demand of smart-watch around the globe.
Various companies like Pebble, Samsaung Galaxy Gear, Google Watch and I Watch have marketed smart-watch but all of them worth about from Tk 18,000 to 30,000. Another problem is every brand of smart-watch works for some specific handsets only.
Syed Tasnimul Islam and Syed Irfan Ali Mirza told banglanews that they have named it watch, which would support every smart phones run by GUv Android.
“We have first developed an Android apps and then started working on hardwires. We used ArduinoProMicro/Nano, BluetoothModule HC-05, OLED display, RTC (Real Time Clock) module, 5-way Switch, vibrator motor as hardwires,” they told banglanews.
We first connected the Android handset with our BluetoothModule through Bluetooth communication. Our Android apps will check the handset for incoming calls and messages at every second.
SmartWatch will vibrate whenever a call will come and show the number or name (if the number is already saved in the phone) on the display of the watch.
Alert calls will be shown as missed calls or the user can receive the call by pressing the button of the watch in case of emergency.
They also said that first 30 digits of a message and the name of the sender will be shown on the display of the watch.
Besides, users, using this watch, can increase or decrease ring volume, music volume, can change music tracks. Users also can use GPS (Global Positioning System) through this watch.
Besides all these apps, temperature of the room and battery level of the phone also can be seen through this watch, they added.
They also said that the cost of this SmartWatch would be about Tk 6,000.
Syed Tasnimul Islam and Syed Irfan Ali Mirza told banglanews that they started the project around three months ago and completed it on April 8, 2013. Electronics and Communication Engineering Department’s Lecturer Sumit Saha and department head Dr Mostafizur Rahman encouraged them a lot.
Earlier, KUET students made line follower, obstacle avoider, garbage cleaner, and voice controlling robot, soundless airplanes, and special goggles for blind, universal smart energy metres. Banglanews covered all the stories of inventions with utmost importance.
