DHAKA: Apple announced it sold over 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones in the first three days the new devices were available for sale.

This means that the company continues its record-breaking streak of opening weekend sales, topping last year’s figure of nine million iPhones sold for the 5s and 5c.

The latest iPhones launched 19 September in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK.

However, they will be available in more than 20 additional countries from 26 September and in 115 countries by the end of the year, according to telecompaper.com.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the first weekend of sales surpassed the company's expectations, breaking all its previous sales records by a large margin, the news-portal added.

He noted moreover that demand outstripped supply, and the company is working to ramp up production in order to meet all the orders as quickly as possible.

Although Android still dominates the global smartphone market, the iPhone continues to be the most popular single device in many developed countries with 42 percent market share in the US.

The iPhone also continues to be Apple’s main money spinner, providing around 70 percent of the company’s profit.
