Consumer suffering increased as the prices of various essential commodities are skyrocketing in kitchen markets across the capital. 

On Friday (May 5), traders from several kitchen markets in the capital sold green chillies at Tk 100 - Tk 120 per kg, papaya at Tk 60 - Tk 70 per kg which was Tk 35 - Tk 40 per kg two weeks ago. Besides, four pieces of lemon was sold at Tk 35 – Tk 40, tomatoes at Tk 30 - Tk 40 per kg.

Fazle Rabbi, a vegetable seller of Khilgaon market said all types of vegetable prices have increased slightly. 

He also claimed that vegetables are not available like before and prices are also higher in wholesale level.

On the other hand, onion prices had gone up as well. Onions were sold at Tk 50 – Tk 50 per kg in the retail market, compared to Tk 35 - 40 last week.

Garlics were being sold at Tk 130 – Tk 180 per kg in the kitchen markets which was Tk 80 – Tk 120 in a month ago in the city’s kitchen markets. 

Traders in kitchen markets across Dhaka have increased mutton, beef and chicken prices, creating more pressure on the wallets of consumers - especially those from the middle and low-income groups.

Beef prices rose to Tk 1000 - 1100 per kg in the city’s markets on Friday. Mutton prices have hit Tk 730 – Tk 750 per kg. 

Broiler chicken is selling for Tk 240 per kg and Sonali chicken is being sold for Tk 350 per kg.
