Five Indian power companies that supply electricity to Bangladesh are owed more than $1 billion, according to a report by The Economic Times on Tuesday.

The industry executives are aware of the matter, the report reads.  Despite the dues, the Indian power companies have not stopped supplying electricity to Bangladesh reflecting the strong friendship between the two countries, the companies’ executives were quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Of the dues, about $800 million is owed to Adani Power which supplies electricity from its 1.6 GW coal-fired plant in Godda, Jharkhand, through a dedicated transmission corridor, it said.

SEIL Energy India is owed about $150 million as on 30 June 2024. It has a power purchase agreement for 250 MW with Bangladesh, according to the newspaper.

State-owned NTPC, which supplies around 740 MW from three of its power plants to Bangladesh, is owed about $80 million.

Power Trading Corporation (PTC) of India has been owned as of March this year. Out of this, the company has got $46 million till 25 August, The Economic Times report said, quoting an email response from the PTC which supplies electricity to Bangladesh Power Development Board from West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company.

State-owned Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) is owed $20 million, the daily said.
