BAJUS urges enhanced security for jewellers during Eid holidays

The Bangladesh Jeweller’s Association (BAJUS) has called on authorities to bolster security for jewellery shops and traders during the upcoming Eid holidays.

At a press conference on Friday at BAJUS' headquarters in Dhaka, the association's leaders emphasized the growing security concerns facing the jewellery sector.

BAJUS President Sayem Sobhan Anvir led the appeal, highlighting the vital role of around 40,000 jewellery businesses in supporting the nation’s economy.

BAJUS Vice President Repnul Hasan voiced serious concerns about the rising incidents of theft, robbery, and violence targeting jewellers, including murders, kidnappings, and attacks on traders.

He said, “The increasing frequency of these crimes is creating a sense of insecurity for our members.”

The jewellery industry is particularly worried about a potential surge in criminal activity as Eid approaches, with BAJUS urging stronger cooperation from the government to safeguard traders and their property.

The association has expressed gratitude to law enforcement agencies for their efforts in combating crime but continues to stress the need for heightened protection during this busy period.

The association also recounted the recent attack on BAJUS Vice President MA Hannan Azad’s residence by a gang disguised as law enforcement officers.

Additionally, BAJUS reported 23 incidents of theft and robbery across jewellery establishments nationwide between January of last year and March 26, resulting in significant financial losses.

In response, BAJUS has issued seven security guidelines for jewellery businesses, including installing CCTV, employing security personnel, and coordinating with police when transporting valuable goods. The association has urged the government to provide extra armed security and recover stolen property to ensure jewellers’ safety during the festive season.
