Egg prices drop by Tk25-30 per dozen

Egg prices at retail markets across the capital have decreased by Tk25 to 30 per dozen, thanks to government measures to make eggs more affordable.

To ease the burden on consumers, the government has reduced the import duty on eggs from 25% to 5%. This reduction will remain in effect until December 15, according to an order from the National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued on Thursday.

Egg traders at Kawran Bazar said that the government's actions have increased supply, leading to the price drop. Wholesale prices for 100 eggs have fallen to Tk1,101, down from Tk1,170-1,180 the previous day. Wholesale prices per dozen are now Tk132.12, compared to Tk141.6 yesterday.

Mizanur Rahman, a Dhaka resident, shared that he recently bought a dozen eggs from Mirpur market for Tk150, a significant drop from Tk180 just two days ago. He urged the government to enhance monitoring to ensure that retailers follow the regulated pricing.

Fahmina Akter, assistant director at the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection (DNCRP), confirmed during market inspections at West Shewrapara Kacha Bazar and Taltola Kacha Bazar that egg prices were in line with the government’s guidelines.

As per government-set prices, eggs should be sold for Tk10.58 each at the producer level, Tk11.01 at wholesale, and Tk11.87 at retail. At Shwapno, the country's largest retail chain, loose eggs are currently priced at Tk11.67 each.

To further stabilize prices, corporate entities have pledged to supply two million eggs daily to Dhaka's key wholesale markets, Tejgaon and Kaptan Bazar. The initiative, led by the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council, began in Kaptan Bazar yesterday and is expected to impact the entire country.
