CU closed amid campus violence, residents asked to vacate dorms

CHITTAGONG: Chittagong University was declared closed till September 16 amid raging campus violence as fresh outbreaks of rioting Monday left over 100 injured.

The varsity authorities also asked the male students to vacate their dormitories by 6pm while the females by 10am Tuesday.

Meanwhile, police raided different dorms and rounded up over 100 students.

Last few days’ student agitation at Chittagong University erupted into massive violence Monday as students locked into clashes with police on the campus, leaving over 100 injured from both sides.

Journalist Razib Nandi, Chittagong correspondent of daily Kaler Kantha, was also injured during the campus battles over the issue of tuition-fee hike.

Police also held 10 students from the campus.   


Chittagong University students have been demonstrating on the campus and boycotting classes for a week in protest against the recent tuition-fee hike and also demanding withdrawal of punitive measures against some students.


Campus sources said the agitated students, divided into three groups, brought out separate processions on the campus in the morning.

While a procession was passing by the students’ union building, some students attacked constable Arif and havilder Habib, prompting the law enforcers to charge baton on them.

Angered by police action, students also pelted them with brickbats, triggering the trouble.  

At one stage, the students vandalized at least 50 vehicles, the CU branch of Agrani Bank, four faculty buildings and the administrative building.

The demonstrators allegedly assaulted officials at the administrative building and damaged important documents.

Deputy Police Super Babul Akhter and at least 50 policemen were injured during the clashes, informed Babul Akhter.


Earlier in a press meet on July 29, the students had announced an indefinite strike halting academic and administrative activities on the campus in protest against certain measures taken by the varsity authorities.


The university authorities in a meeting on July 26 expelled a student for two years and issued show-cause notices to five others on charge of assaulting two teachers during their defiant agitation.


On March 13, 2009, the University authorities had banned all kinds of political activities, rally and procession on the campus trying to maintain peace, which eventually appears to have backfired.
