Case lodged against Nawazuddin Siddiqui

A police complaint was filed against Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui after a Kolkata based advocate accused him and the CEO of Coca Cola for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the Bengali community.

Dibyayan Banerji, a lawyer from the Calcutta High Court, has lodged a complaint and as reported by Livemint. “The main advertisement by Coca-Cola for its product Sprite was in Hindi. And we have no problems with that. We only have a problem with Bengali dubbing of the ad which is running on various TV channels and websites,” he said.

He added, “Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is laughing at one of the jokes, which says, ‘shoja anguley ghee na uthley, Bangali khali petey ghumiye porey’. In English, it means that if Bengalis don’t get anything easily, they sleep hungry. And this, we think, hurts the sentiments of the Bengali community.”

According to reports the company has taken down the Bengali version of the advertisement and has issued an apology saying they ‘regret the recent ad campaign for the cold drink and that the company respects Bengali language’.

The 20-second television commercial showed Nawazuddin laughing at a joke made by the Sprite bottle while standing at a railway station. However, the report stated that the literal meaning of the joke was, “If they can’t take the ghee out with a straight finger, Bengali sleep hungry.”

On the work front, Nawazuddin will next be seen in the film Afwaah opposite Bhumi Pednekar. He also has Kangana Ranaut’s Tiku Weds Sheru, in the pipeline.
