Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his willingness to work under Donald Trump’s leadership to achieve a lasting peace, days after a tense meeting in the Oval Office.

In a social media statement, Zelensky acknowledged that the White House discussions "did not go as planned" but emphasized the need to "make things right" after Trump accused him of being unwilling to negotiate.

The Ukrainian leader outlined initial steps toward ending the war, including an immediate prisoner exchange and a ceasefire in air and sea operations—provided Russia agrees to the same terms.

"We want to move quickly through all stages and work with the US to finalize a strong peace deal," Zelensky wrote.

The fallout from the meeting came as the US announced a temporary pause in military aid to Ukraine, prompting concerns among Kyiv’s allies.

Despite the diplomatic setback, Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s gratitude for US support, highlighting the significance of Trump’s previous decision to provide Javelin anti-tank missiles.

During the Oval Office discussions, Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelensky for lacking appreciation, prompting Trump to question his level of gratitude.

The talks, initially expected to finalize a minerals deal granting the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth resources, ended without an agreement after Trump accused Zelensky of "gambling with World War III" and told him to return "when ready for peace."

European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, backed Zelensky’s commitment to diplomacy.

However, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged him to rebuild relations with Trump, stating, "We must respect what Trump has done for Ukraine."

Meanwhile, Moscow welcomed the US aid suspension, calling it the "best contribution" to peace. Trump has yet to directly respond to Zelensky’s remarks but previously criticized him for suggesting a peace deal remains "very far away."
