Gazipur highway blocked as workers protest layoffs

Workers in Gazipur blocked a major highway on Saturday morning in protest against the dismissal of over 100 employees at a local factory.

The incident took place in the Baimile area under Konabari police station, where employees of the Standard Eastis Oven (FF Tower) factory gathered to express their dissatisfaction with the mass layoffs.

According to police and local sources, more than a hundred workers were let go from the factory, sparking the protest. As the unrest escalated, workers blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway, halting traffic for approximately 30 minutes.

Konabari Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Nazrul Islam, confirmed that authorities responded swiftly to the situation. Police engaged with the workers and successfully persuaded them to clear the highway, bringing the situation under control.

The protest momentarily disrupted the flow of traffic, but no further incidents were reported.
