Chittagong: A Dubai-returnee’s wife was shot dead while he was wounded by bullet as robbers fired on them in their house at Mohonpurkhil village in Fatikchhari Upazilla early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Bela Khatun, 40. Her husband Ahmed Safa, 48, was admitted into Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Police sent the body to CMCH morgue.

Police and witnesses said a gang of 20 to 25 armed robbers broke into the house at the dead of night. They looted cash, gold ornaments and valuables worth Tk 10 lakh.

“As they screamed, the fleeing bandits opened fire on the couple. Bela died on the spot and Safa was wounded seriously,” family members told police.

An overseas employee, Safa returned home from Dubai last Friday, they added.

A case was filed with the local police. None was arrested so far.
