After killing Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anar in a flat in Kolkata, the suspected murderers left the murder spot wearing his clothes, a joint team of Dhaka Metropolitan police and West Bengal CID said.

Anar’s murder came to the fore last week days after the leader went missing in Kolkata after arriving in the city from Bangladesh on May 12.

CCTV footage showed the killers leaving the apartment in New Town with plastic bags and a trolley bag that allegedly contained the chopped-up body parts of the Bangladeshi leader.

The police have also revealed that the killers fled with Rs 4.3 lakh belonging to Anar after they killed him.

Officials have identified one Mohammed Siam Hossein as having taken the money. Hossein is suspected to be hiding in Nepal.

Main accused on the run

Anar’s close friend, the one who he was seen with last, is the main accused in the crime.

A US citizen, Akhtaruzzaman, had allegedly paid Rs 5 crore to the suspects involved in the crime.

Akhtaruzzaman is suspected to have already fled to the US. A Dhaka Police official who arrived in Kolkata on Sunday to investigate the murder said, “We will seek help from the Interpol to bring back Akhtaruzzaman, the fugitive mastermind behind Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar’s death.”

“Akhtaruzzaman may have escaped from Kathmandu to the US via Dubai. We are trying to trace him through Interpol. We will go to the CID office and meet the officers. We will try to interrogate the arrested accused so that we can get more information,” the official added.

3 people arrested

Meanwhile, four people allegedly involved in the murder of the Bangladeshi lawmaker have been arrested by investigators as the main accused and three others are still at large.

Police officials suspect that the victim was first strangulated following which his body was chopped into several pieces. The body was then deskinned and mixed with turmeric powder to delay decomposition.

The dismembered body parts were placed in a trolley bag which was taken to different locations across Kolkata to be scattered. Meanwhile, some body parts were also kept in a fridge.
