BNP to propose names for EC formation

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday night (January 30) decided to propose five names to the Search Committee for the formation of Election Commission (EC) that would oversee next general polls.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was talking to journalists after holding a meeting with senior leaders and party Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan political office at night.

Mirza Fakhrul further said BNP and its allies from 20-party alliance will propose names for prospective chief election commissioner and other commissioners differently within due time.

Earlier, Fakhrul hold a meeting with Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partho, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA) chief Shafiul Alam Pradhan, Bangladesh NAP president Zebel Rahman Gani, Bangladesh Muslim League chairman AHM Qamruzzaman Khan, Khelafat Majlish secretary general Dr Ahmed Abdul Qader and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam at Gulshan office around 8:00 pm.

Later, he held a three-hour-long meeting with Khaleda Zia. He talked to journalists after completing the meeting around 12:45 am.

Earlier, the six-member EC Search Committee sought five names from each of the political parties that held meetings with the President Abdul Hamid.
