Khaleda’s reinvestigation appeal cancelled BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia

DHAKA: The High Court on Thursday (March 9) cancelled Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s appeal to partial reinvestigation of Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

An HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Sahidul Karim passed the order.

Earlier, the hearing was concluded on Wednesday. Lawyer Abdur Razzak Khan, in assistance of Zakir Hossain Bhuiyan, moved for the petition while Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer was Khurshid Alam Khan.

On March 7, Zakir Hossain said the alleged money for the Trust came from Saudi Arabia but actually it was from Kuwait. Khaleda Zia appealed against this statement.

The case is under trial at a makeshift court of the third special Judge Abu Ahmed Jomader in Bakshi Bazar.

On July 3 in 2008, ACC filed a case for allegedly misusing Tk 21,071,671 from the funds of the Zia Orphanage Trust.

A total of six people, including Khaleda Zia and her elder son Tarique Rahman, were made accused in the case.

Other accused are former BNP lawmaker Kazi Saleemul Haque Kamal alias Econo Kamal, businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed, former principal secretary to PMO Dr. Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and Mominur Rahman.

As many as 32 witnesses have given their statement in this case.

Kazi Saleemul Haque Kamal and Sharfuddin Ahmed submitted written confessional statements while Dr. Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and Momenur Rahman remain fugitive from the outset of the trial.
