COMILLA: BNP nominated mayor candidate Monirul Haque Sakku has again won the Comilla City Corporation (CCC) polls.
He defeated Awami League nominated candidate Anjum Sultana Seema by a margin of over ten thousand votes.
According to the unofficial result announced by the returning officer on Thursday evening (March 30), Sakku bagged 68,795 votes with the symbol ‘sheaf of paddy’, while Seema got 58,261 votes with the symbol ‘boat’ in 101 polling stations.
Balloting in 103 polling stations began at 8:00 am and continued till 4:00 pm without break amid tight security. Incidents of sporadic violence and clashes, and allegations of rigging were reported from different polling centres in the polls. For this, polling was suspended in two stations.
It was the first large-scale election under the newly formed Election Commission, headed by KM Nurul Huda.
Three mayoral candidates from ruling Awami League, BNP and JSD and an independent candidate contested in the polls.
Meanwhile, a total of 163 candidates contested for the councilor posts. Among them, 41 women contested for nine reserved seats.
