GAZIPUR: An additional superintendent of police (ASP) and at least nine others have been injured in a clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Bhawal Badre Alam Government College in Gazipur.

ASP Sakhawat Hossain is the injured. Police have arrested at least 12 leaders and workers of BCL, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, from the spot.

The clash took place on Saturday noon (April 01) over students’ union election of the Bhawal Badre Alam Government College.

Liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque took part in a prize giving ceremony on the campus and inaugurated the Sheikh Fazilatunnensa female hostel in the college.

The college unit president of BCL Sajib Hossain Sabuj and his supporters in the function demanded arrangement of students’ union election of the college immediately. The minister gave assurance in this regard.

When the minister was leaving the campus, at the time supporters of the president group blocked minister’s car demanding date of the election. Supporters of general secretary Sourav’s group prevented them, promoting the clash between the two groups.      

Tense situation was prevailing on the campus. Additional police and members of RAB were deployed to avert untoward situation.   

Later, police dispersed the BCL men and arrested its central leader Onik and 11 others.
