Bangabandhu killed to ruin Liberation War spirit: PM

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has commented that the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed in a bid to ruin the spirit of the Liberation War in 1971.

She was addressing a function at Agargoan in the city on Sunday (April 16) on the occasion of opening of the new building of Dhaka’s Liberation War Museum.

The PM inaugurated the new building of the museum, which has been shifted from city’s Segunbagicha.

Sheikh Hasina said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had the preparation for country’s independence from past. “He (Bangabandhu) always used to say that there is no way without independence,” she said.

She alleged that although the country achieved its independence under the leadership of Bangabandu, a vested quarter had tried to distort the history of the Liberation War following assassination of the father of the nation in 1975. “Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with family was killed in a bid to ruin the spirit of the Liberation War,” she said.

The PM also said that the Awami League government stopped the conspiracy of distorting history. “We place the real history and spirit of the Liberation War to the new generation. Now the freedom fighters can proudly say that they fought for the country,” she said.

She said that Bangabandhu had wanted to rebuild the country. But he was not given time for rebuilding the country, as he survived three years after the independence.

The PM alleged that not only distorting history and ruing spirit, the vested quarter was also trying to change culture and tradition of the country after the political changeover in 1975. The criminals of the 1971 war were rehabilitated in the politics, she added.

“We held trial of the war criminals. We also executed the killers of Bangabandu. I thank the judges who gave the verdicts and other concerned.”

She claimed that the people of the country voted the Awami League to the power for holding the trials.
