Tofail raps SC judges for Amendment verdict

DHAKA: Awami League senior leader and commerce minister Tofail Ahmed has sharply criticized the Supreme Court judges for their observations in the verdict on the 16th constitutional amendment.

Tofail Ahmed came down heavily on the SC judges when he was speaking at a discussion meeting at the BMA auditorium in the city on Wednesday (August 09).

Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) arranged the discussion meeting on the occasion of the National Mourning Day. Some other senior leaders of the ruling party also attended the program.

Tofail Ahmed said that the court can’t say the Parliament immature. “If the Parliament is immature, the judges’ maturity will also be questioned. The judges’ maturity can’t reflect in observations,” he said.

He further said that they have been disappointed over the verdict.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court released its full text of verdict on August 01. The apex court upheld the High Court’s decision that scrapped the 16th constitutional amendment that had restored Parliament’s power to remove judges for misconduct and incapacity.

The apex court, however, made some observations in its verdict which went against the government and the Parliament.
