We are unable to bear Rohingya push-in: Quader

DHAKA: Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader has urged the United Nations (UN) and international community to stand beside Bangladesh as it does not have the ability to bear the continues flow of Rohingya people fleeing Myanmar into the country.

Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges minister, made the remark to reporters after a meeting at the ministry’s conference room on Thursday (Sep 7).

Quader said we do not have any ambiguity on the Rohingya issue. Our stance is loud and clear. We are handling the situation very carefully with vigilance and humanity. But we can’t endure the flow of Rohingyas anymore and already summoned Myanmar’s ambassador four times to express our strong objection over the issue.

“We are in constant contact with the United Nations by keeping them up-to-date with the latest scenario and our concerns. From the humanitarian ground, we are not pushing back the Rohingyas but objecting the push in. We are concerned about the way innocent civilians are being massacred in the name counter-terrorism.”

Mentioning that around 1.5 lakh Rohingyas have entered in Bangladesh, the minister said we can’t handle this pressure. Besides, we are more concern whether illegal arms and drugs are getting inside the country with Rohingyas.

“We are strongly calling the government of Myanmar to stop the violence and repression and take back the Rohingyas. We are resisting the flow but also expressing humanity to so many people who are fleeing the intolerable violence of Myanmar’s Rkahine state including men, women and children with a trail of bloody exodus.”
