DHAKA: The by-polls for the mayor post in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will be held in the last week of February. The Election Commission (EC) will announce the polls schedule in the second week of January.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the commission on Sunday (December 17). The meeting was held at the EC Secretariat at Agargaon in the city.

Acting Secretary of the EC Helal Uddin Ahmed briefed the reporters after the meeting.

He said that they will announce the polls schedule in the second week of January.  The voting will also be held for a total of 36 new wards which were included in the DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on the same day, he said.

The DNCC mayor post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on November 30 at a hospital in London.

According to the local government (City Corporation) laws, election must be held within 90 days of the seat falling vacant.
