The interim government is considering banning the Awami League following student-people protest and after discussing with all the political parties.
A decision in this regard will be made soon after discussions with political parties, said an official statement on Friday (May 9).
The statement, issued by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, said the demand to ban the Awami League has come from several political parties, organisations, and the public. The demand is based on allegations of authoritarian rule and violent activities by the party.
"The government is taking these calls seriously and has already started contacting political parties. A final decision will be taken soon after discussions," the statement read.
According to the United Nations, around 1,400 people were killed in the uprising due to violent actions by security forces and armed Awami League cadres, allegedly under the direction of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The statement said that the government is also reviewing the UN report on the alleged involvement of Awami League leaders and supporters in terrorist activities. Meanwhile, the public has been urged to remain patient.
Earlier, in response to public demand, the government banned Chhatra League, terming it a terrorist organisation under existing laws.
The government is also taking steps to amend the International Crimes Tribunal Act to take action against organisations linked to crimes against humanity, the statement added.
On former President Abdul Hamid’s quiet departure from the country at midnight, the statement said the government is aware of the public outrage. It assured that legal action will be taken against all those involved in the incident.
