BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan on Friday said that the decision to ban the Awami League should be made by the Election Commission and the government, not by BNP.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan in response to questions about the July fighters' sit-in programme in front of the Chief Adviser’s Office demanding a ban on the Awami League.

“This is not a decision for BNP to make. The real authority lies with the people. They will decide who can contest elections and who cannot,” he said.

Referring to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Moin Khan added, “Our party has already said this is a matter of public judgment. The people will decide who should participate in elections.”

He also raised a question about the Awami League’s stance on democracy and elections. 

“Has any Awami League leader, in the last nine months, admitted to their fascist oppression, corruption, and destruction of the country over the past 15 years? Has anyone said they made mistakes and apologised to the nation? No one has,” he said.
