CHITTAGONG UNIVERSITY: A fraction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Chittagong University called for an indefinite strike in demand for the release of an accused, CU teacher Anowar Hossain, who was sent to jail in BCL leader Diaz murder case.

The strike entered in its second day on Tuesday (Dec 19) halting all academic activities at CU.

According to campus sources, BCL protesters cut a hose pipe of shuttle train’s compartment carrying CU students on way to campus. Earlier in the morning, protesters burned a rubber tire in front of the main entrance of the university. 

The campus is standing still as no one is allowed to move. However, police opened the main gate around 8:00am.

When contacted, CU deputy-exam controller Md Abu Taher told Banglanews that because of the ongoing strike, all pre-scheduled examinations have been suspended.

Hathazari police station officer-in-charge (OC) Belaluddin told Banglanews extra police forces have been deployed in the campus area to avert and untoward situation.

CU assistant proctor Niaz Morshed said university authority is trying to make discussion with the protesters. Hopefully the situation will be normal soon.

Earlier on Monday (Dec 18), a former Chittagong University (CU) assistant proctor Anowar Hossain was sent to jail in a case filed over the murder of CU BCL leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury.

Following the court order, BCL fraction staged demonstration and called for indefinite strike.

Earlier on November 20 in 2016, police recovered the hanging body of Diaz Irfan Chowdhury from his family residence in Chittagong.
