DHAKA: The BNP on Saturday (January 13) said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's address to the nation has pushed the country towards political crisis further. The party urged the PM to hold talks with all the political parties to resolve the crisis.
The party’s secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press conference at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office in the city said that the PM’s address was immoral and unconstitutional. Her plan over the polls-time government would create crisis in the country further, he said.
The party arranged the press conference to express its formal reaction to the Sheikh Hasina’s address to the nation and her plan on the election-time government.
BNP standing committee members Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury were also present at the press conference.
Mirza Fakhrul said that Sheikh Hasina indicated at her plan of holding the 11th Parliamentary polls like Januray-5 polls of 2014. She told about polls-time government as per the constitution. There is no clear provision in the constitution about the polls-time government, he said.
He also said that the next general election won’t be free and fair if it is held under a partisan government.
Sheikh Hasina in her address to the nation on Friday (January 12) said that the next parliamentary polls will be held under an election-time government as per the constitution.
Mirza Fakhrul said that the PM confused the people through her address. She did not touch the sufferings of the people in her speech. Rather, she pushed the country towards uncertainty.
The BNP leader claimed that the nation has been frustrated over the speech. The people hoped that Sheikh Hasina will deliver such a speech which will clear the way of resolving the political crisis.
He said that no election will be held under the current government and keeping the Parliament undissolved. The prime minister should take an initiative for holding talks with all political parties in this regard. Sit with the parties to find a way to hold an acceptable election, he said.
