DHAKA: At least eight aspirants, including former FBCCI president Atiqul Islam, on Saturday (January 13) collected the nomination forms from the Awami League’s office for mayoral by-polls in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Atiqul Islam collected the nomination papers through his campaign team from Awami League president’s office at Dhanmondi in the city.
AKM Mizanur Rahman, the election coordinator of Atiqul Islam, collected the nomination papers on behalf of Atiqul Islam at about 3:30 pm.
The seven other aspirants who collected the nomination papers from AL office are- former AL MP Dr HBM Iqbal, FBCCI director Helal Uddin, Dhaka University teacher Zubair Alam, poet Rasel Ashiki, businessman Adam Tamiji Haq, principal of Monipur High School & College Farhad Hossain and teacher Shah Alam.
Earlier in the morning, Awami League started selling nomination papers for the mayoral by-polls in a bid to select the party-backed candidate for the upcoming mayoral elections.
The form distribution will continue until Monday (January 15) in the Dhanmondi office. Interested aspirants can buy a nomination form in exchange of Tk 25,000.
The ruling party will pick a candidate for the by-polls after interviewing the aspirants at a meeting of AL’s local government polls nomination board on January 16.
The DNCC polls are scheduled to be held on February 26. The mayor post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq who died in a London hospital on November 30.
