DHAKA: The Supreme Court adjourned till Wednesday the hearing on the appeals challenging the death penalty to Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Amir Delwar Hossain Sayedee in crimes against humanity charges.

The five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain passed the adjournment order after concluding the first day’s hearing.

In the presence of Attorney General Mahbub-e-Alam, chief lawyer of Sayedee Barrister Abdur Razzak presented his argument first.

Other members of the bench are Justice Foyez Siddiqui in place of Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, Justice Abdul Wahab Mian and Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury.

On March 28, State and defense counsels both filed separate appeal petitions with the Supreme Court against the ICT verdict that awarded Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee death sentence.

Sayedee’s lawyers filed the appeal petition with the appellate division seeking his release and acquittal of the proved war time charges while the state prosecutors filed another petition seeking Sayedee’s punishments in the rest of war time charges proved during the ICT trial.

On February 28, Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee was sentenced to death for his involvement in crimes against humanity during liberation war in 1971.
