First case of Human Metapneumovirus detected in Bangladesh

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), which recently caused concern in China, has now been identified in Bangladesh after a woman from Bhairab, Kishoreganj district, was reported to be infected.

Dr. Ahmed Nowsher Alam, head of the virology department at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) today (Jan 12).

In addition to HMPV, another bacterial infection has also been identified in her body, he also said.

An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "On Saturday (11 January), we received a report of a new HMPV infection. The patient is also infected with Klebsiella pneumoniae. She had no history of foreign travel. She is currently undergoing treatment at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in the capital. From what we understand, her condition has slightly improved compared to before."

This marks the first known case of HMPV in Bangladesh. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further spread.
