In one of the most extensive evacuation orders since the start of the war, Israel has directed thousands of Palestinians to leave large areas of Gaza City, ahead of what the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) describes as "intensified strikes."

Residents have been warned to evacuate parts of Gaza City already devastated by previous bombings. The targeted zone includes the Islamic University, Al-Shifa Hospital, and three former schools—locations Israel claims are being used by Hamas as command centers.

However, local authorities and humanitarian groups report that these sites are currently sheltering thousands of displaced civilians.

Aid agencies have expressed alarm, warning that relocating such large numbers on short notice could lead to mass casualties. The move is widely seen as a signal of Israel’s intention to escalate its military operations in the enclave.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has publicly criticized the war's expansion, stating in a BBC interview that "most Israelis, and many army commanders, oppose continuing the campaign and want the war to end."

He denounced the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as "unforgivable," stressing that Israel must meet the basic needs of civilians and prevent famine.

Despite mounting international concern—including condemnation from French President Emmanuel Macron—Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains firm. His administration insists that the humanitarian crisis is being caused by Hamas, not Israel.

Meanwhile, calls for a ceasefire are growing. Sixty-seven former hostages released by Hamas signed a letter urging Netanyahu to reach a comprehensive deal for the remaining captives.

A recent poll found that 68% of Israelis would support such a deal, even if it meant ending the war.

Since October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise cross-border attack that killed 1,200 people, over 52,900 Palestinians have died in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
