LALMONIRHAT: Local administration imposed section 144 to avert imminent clash after an Awami League leader was beaten to death on Sunday.

Following the incident, local administration imposed section 144 in Kafirbazar and Sharuarbazar under the upazila till 11:00pm on Sunday.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rafiqul Islam announced the section144.  

Earlier in the day, Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir beat to death the AL leader in Sherwar Bazar area under Patgram upazila of the district on Sunday noon.

The deceased was identified as Mintoo Mia, 35, son of Bahal Uddin and Religion Affairs Secretary of No-2 Awami League of Patgram upazila.

Witnesses said Jamaat-Shibir men beat Mintoo randomly around 1:00pm and dumped his body on rail line and fled the scene.

Besides, Jamaat-Shibir men set fire to two houses, including the house of upazila Awami League office secretary Lovelu.

Earlier in the morning, three Chhatra Shibir men, including its Patgram upazila unit president, were killed and 15 other injured in a clash with police in Kafirbazar area in the upazila of the district.

The deceased were identified as Upazila unit Chhatra Shibir president Moniruzzaman, 25, its two activists Abdur Rahim, 22 and Saju, 32.

District police super Habibur Rahman could not be reached for comment regarding overall situation of the area.
