HC bans cattle market in capital’s Meradia

The High Court (HC) has imposed a three-month ban on setting up a temporary cattle market on the open space beside the canal east of Meradia Bazar in the capital's Banasree area ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

The order came on Monday (April 28) after a hearing on a writ petition filed by a local resident.

The bench of Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque and Justice Ainum Naher Siddiqua also issued a rule in this regard.

Advocates Liton Ahmed and Zahirul Islam represented the petitioner in court.

Later, lawyer Zahirul Islam told reporters that cattle markets cannot be set up in residential areas. However, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) published a lease notice mentioning the location under column nine of the notice issued on April 21.

In response, Banasree resident Md Shahab Uddin Shikder filed the writ challenging the legality of the entry.

In the rule, the court asked authorities to explain why setting up a cattle market at the mentioned location for Eid-ul-Azha 2025 should not be declared illegal and why the ninth column of the lease notice should not be removed.

The rule was issued to the Local Government Secretary, the Director General of the Department of Environment, the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka, the Administrator, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Property Officer of DSCC, the Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and the Officer-in-Charge of Khilgaon Police Station.
