Inqilab journo on 2-day remand

DHAKA: A Dhaka Court on Monday placed Daily Inqilab’s diplomatic correspondent Atiqur Rahman on a two-day remand for police interrogation on the charge of publishing concocted news item.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate SM Ashiqur Rahman Monday passed the remand order after police had produced him before the court with a ten-day remand plea.

The court also denied the bail pleas of two other Inqilab journalists.

On January 17, Sub-Inspector of Wari Thana KM Firoz produced the daily Inqilab’s News editor Robiullah Robi, Deputy Chief Reporter Rafiq Mohammad and diplomatic correspondent Atiqur Rahman to Chief Metropolitan Court of Dhaka and sought for 5-day remand of Atiqur Rahman.

But metropolitan magistrate Yunus Ali fixed Monday as the date of remand and appeal hearing as there was no case docket.

On Thursday night (January 16), Detective Branch of Police sealed off the Daily Inqilab office and its press for violation of information technology act.

Meanwhile, police seized computer CPU and held four journalists of the newspaper for publishing a false report titled, “Indian army assist joint force operation in Satkhira.”

Later, police released Senior Reporter Afjal Bari at around 11:15pm Thursday.
