Bhorer Kagoj shuts down

The authorities of Bhorer Kagoj, a leading Bengali newspaper, have announced its closure following demands from journalists for unpaid wages and other benefits.

A notice was posted at the newspaper’s office in Dhaka’s Mouchak area, stating that the shutdown would take effect on Monday.

The publication, which operated both in print and online, was led by editor Shyamal Dutta, who is currently imprisoned on corruption charges.

According to reports of the newspaper, its journalists have been demanding wages per the Eighth Wage Board and the payment of arrears from their dates of appointment over the past few days.

A section of the journalists and leaders of different journalists' unions held a demonstration in front of the newspaper's head office on Sunday.
