Bangladeshi expats in UAE, SA to enjoy Hilsa soon

Bangladeshi expatriates in Saudi Arabia (SA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will soon be able to taste Hilsa fish as government planned to export 11,000 tons.

Farida Akhter, an adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, said the export is planned for August, September, and the first week of October this year.

She shared the information during a press briefing at the ministry's conference room on Monday (February 17).

The Adviser said that Bangladesh has banned Hilsa exports since 2012. However, in the 2023-24 fiscal year, the country produced 5.30 lakh tons of Hilsa. The interim government is working to ensure adequate supply for local consumers while keeping prices stable.

She said the decision was made following requests from expatriates.

Initially, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock will recommend the Ministry of Commerce approve the export of 11,000 tons of Hilsa to these two countries, she said.

If successful, the government may consider exporting to other nations in the future, she added.
